7 Hair Growth Myths

July 24, 2023

From oiling your hair before every wash to getting frequent haircuts, we've all grown up hearing various tips on maintaining long and healthy hair. However, not all of this well-intended advice holds true when examined with a scientific lens. In this blog, we will unravel the truth about seven common hair growth myths.

Myth 1: Regular Haircuts Boost Hair Growth

Many of us have been told that getting regular trims can speed up hair growth. The truth, however, is that your hair grows from the roots in the scalp, not the ends. Cutting your hair does not influence the rate at which it grows. Regular trims can eliminate split ends and maintain the overall health and appearance of your hair, but they won't make it grow faster.

Myth 2: Brushing Your Hair Frequently Will Make It Grow Faster

Contrary to popular belief, excessive brushing can cause physical harm to your hair. Over-brushing can lead to hair breakage and split ends. While brushing helps distribute natural oils evenly throughout the hair, promoting a healthy shine, it does not stimulate hair growth. Use a brush with soft bristles, and avoid brushing your hair when it's wet, as this is when it's most vulnerable to breakage.

Myth 3: Hair Grows Faster When You Sleep

While it's true that our body, including our hair, repairs and regenerates itself during sleep, there's no evidence to suggest that hair grows faster while sleeping. Hair growth is a gradual process that happens over months and years, not hours. A good night's sleep can contribute to overall health and well-being, which in turn can support healthy hair, but it doesn't specifically speed up hair growth.

Myth 4: Shampooing Causes Hair Loss

This is one of the most widespread myths about hair growth. The truth is, shampooing your hair does not cause it to fall out. Hair shedding during washing is part of the normal hair life cycle. Shampooing is important for maintaining a clean, healthy scalp, which facilitates hair growth. Choose a mild shampoo suited to your hair type and remember to massage gently.

Myth 5: Hair Loss Is Primarily Genetic

Genetics certainly play a role in hair loss, but they aren't the only factor. Stress, poor diet, hormonal imbalances and certain health conditions can also contribute to hair loss. A healthy lifestyle, a balanced diet and proper hair care can support hair health regardless of your genetic predisposition.

Myth 6: Rubbing Onion Juice Or Chilli Paste Can Promote Hair Growth

There's no scientific evidence to support the claim that applying onion juice or chilli paste can stimulate hair growth. In fact, these substances might irritate the scalp, causing discomfort and inflammation. It's always wise to consult with a professional before applying any unconventional substances to your scalp or hair.

Myth 7: Hair Products Can Repair Split Ends

No hair product can permanently repair split ends. The only effective treatment for split ends is a trim. Hair products can temporarily seal the hair shaft to give it a smoother, healthier appearance. Regular trims, combined with proper hair care, are the best defence against split ends.
