8 Tips For Maintaining Bright Hair Colours
We all know life is too short for boring hair, but how do you keep your gorgeous new colour fresh and vibrant? Here are our 8 tips for maintaining bright hair colours.
1. Look after your hair
Damaged hair will leach colour every time you wash it. Plus, the dye's chemicals will penetrate the hair cuticles differently, and you may end up with faded or patchy results. Patience with your colour journey, as well as a kickass conditioning regime, will ensure your bright hair lasts.
2. Remember that quality lasts
Quiz your colourist on the hair dye they use - they should be passionate about the brand they love. If they don’t seem to care, chances are they don’t use the best brands on the market.
3. Don't wash every day
Don’t wash your hair too often. As well as stripping away the colour, too much washing will strip away the natural oils that keep your hair happy and healthy. Every three to four days should be more than enough – you can always use a dry shampoo in between.
4. Cool down your water temperature
A cool rinse is an age-old trick. Cool water closes the cuticles on the hair shaft, so all that lovely colour stays locked in. It takes a bit of getting used to, but the results are more than worth it.
5. Say no to sulfates
Sulfates can strip away too much moisture, leaving your hair dry and causing your colour to fade. Always check the bottle and try to choose sulfate-free shampoo.
6. Colour as you condition
If your hair is a solid colour, add a dab of the dye to your conditioner to deliver a regular colour boost. You’ll be getting a deep conditioning treatment too, so it’s a win-win solution.
7. Turn down the heat
Heat styling can damage hair, and damaged hair can’t hold colour. For those days when you need to use the hair dryer or your straighteners, apply a heat protective spray first.
8. Protect your tresses from the sun
The sun isn’t great for your colour, so wear a hat to protect your head (and skin) and use a UV protective spray if you’ll be out in the sun for a long time.
